Event 1 Recap

$350 + $50 NL Deep Stack

Two full days of play wasn't enough as Bill Patterson (New Kensington, PA) needed a third calendar day to win Event 1 of the Borgata Poker Open. Patterson outlasted 964 players to take home the $73,638 first prize.

"It feels good," says the 23 year old on-line heads up specialist, "once it got down to heads up I knew it was pretty much a lock to win." Patterson defeated Mike Wilson (Manassa, VA) who's runner-up finish earned him $43,364.

The tournament began Wednesday morning and featured notable pros Steve Dannenmann (Baltimore, MD), Josh Brikis (Pittsburgh, PA), Jason Young (Suffern, NY) and Mike Leah (Las Vegas, NV). Only Leah cashed with a 32nd place finish, with Dannemann making it to Day 2, but he just missed the money as the top 90 players were paid.

Odette Tremblay (Las Vegas, NV) was the Day 1 chip leader with more than 900k, but her tournament ended with a 35th place finish.

110 players returned for Day 2 and the money bubble broke less than one hour into Thursday's play as they chased the $337,400 total tournament buy-in.

As the field thinned the final table wound up with a strong Pennsylvania flavor. In addition to Patterson, his good friend from Western-PA Brian Munshower (Apollo, PA) finished 5th ($18,000).

Benjamin Butler (S. Williamsport, PA) finished 3rd ($26,182) and John DeLio (Boothwyn, PA) came in 6th ($14,564) giving the Keystone State 4 of the top 6 places. The 4th place finisher was Andrew DeGeorge (Pitman, NJ) who collected $21,928.

As the tournament crept into early Friday morning, Patterson takes the title when he and Wilson both flop a king. Patterson's K J is the winning hand when his kicker plays versus Wilson's K 5.

"I'm always disappointed," said Wilson, "but believe me waking up with $40-some thousand extra isn't so bad. But I would've liked to have had that trophy."

For Patterson this was his second 2010 Borgata final table after finishing 7th in $560 Deep Stack in Event 3 of the Summer Poker Open.
