Gazes is Gonzo

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Bill Gazes had to post 3k for the big blind, which left him with less than that behind. Shawn Pilot raised to 8k utg and Gavin Smith called from the button. Bill tossed the last of his chips in and the flop came A 7 5. Shawn bet 8k and Gavin folded.

Bill Gazes

Shawn showed AK for top/top. Bill stood up to reveal his cards, which he had not yet looked at. The first one he rolled over was an Ace, giving him some hope. The other was a 6, though, leaving him with few outs. The last two cards came 3 K and Bill was busted.

I Get it All

Pantaleo Piles up the Chips

Giuseppe Pantaleo (Bielefeld, Germany via Italy) who already has two final tables during the Borgata Poker Open, is looking to make another deep run.

On a board of KJ68, Pantaleo checks the turn and snap calls the 135k all-in bet of his opponent.

Pantaleo: A
K (top pair, top kicker)
Seat 7: Q 10 (OE straight draw)

River: 6

Pantaleo says, "I get it all," as he takes down a 475k chip pot. As the floor person tries to hand
him racks to chip up, Pantaleo says with a huge smile, "No, no that's my chip stack, my friend."

Pantaleo is now among the chip leaders with 550k.

Several other players now have stacks of more than 100k including Frank Onofrio (Elizabeth, NJ), who finished 5th in Sunday's $560 tournament.

Turning Up the Heat

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Buckner (seated, center) Draws a Crowd

Temperatures have been high all day in the Event Center, but Table 14 in the middle of the room has taken it to a whole new level. Steve Buckner (The Villages, FL) bounds with joy down the aisle after winning a big pot against Larry Wolf (Annapolis, MD).

The board shows 2 7 8 4 A♠ and the pronounced exuberance draws a crowd as the floor person and dealer count the all-in stacks. Buckner is holding 5 6 for a turned straight against Wolf's flopped set with 8 8.

"I get it all," says Buckner, "how do you like me now?" As the chip count continues, Buckner's quick to explain that two hands earlier he gave Wolf 80k on a double up when Breckner had AJ vs KK.

The all-in count is 86,100 and Wolf, who is a 2007 Borgata Winter Open $500 event winner, says that he doesn't mind players enjoying a big hand, but that Buckner's acting like, "a total and complete jerk."

The incident comes on the heels of the Alan Bari, Matt Stout incident, in which Stout received a one orbit penalty earlier in the day.

After the double-up Buckner is now up to 195k.

Wolf Waits for the Final Count

Event 19: Chow Time

$350 + $50 No Limit Hold'em

The 63 remaining players are on a one hour dinner break.

When play resumes there will be 20 minutes left on Level 14 (1.5k/3k/400 ante) as the average stack is 60k.

Dinner Time

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

The dinner bell has rung at the end of level six. Players are filing out for a 75 minute dinner break. Play will resume at about 8:50pm.

Just before dinner, Bernard Lee flopped a set of 8s to beat top pair and chip up to ~155k.

Event 19: Patterson Flying High

$350 + $50 No Limit Hold'em

Tyler Patterson

Tyler Patterson didn't have a great Championship Event as he was eliminated on Day 1, but he's doing well in Event 19.  In a recent hand, he raised preflop to 4k and found two callers.  On a 8T8 flop, the small blind bet out 4k and Tyler called.  When the 5 hit the turn, the small blind checked to Tyler bet 12k, sending his opponent deep into the tank.  Eventually, his opponent made the call.  The river was the 4 and it went check check.  The small blind tabled T7 and Tyler tabled T9.  Tyler's kicker played, and he scooped the pot to get him over 100k.

Dan O'Brien Doubles Up

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Dan O'Brien (right) gets shown aces

At 1k/2k blinds, the button raised to 5k.  Dan O'Brien moved all in from the small blind, and the button called after the big blind folded.  Dan O'Brien had JJ, but unfortunately his opponent had AA.  After a lucky board of 586J2, O'Brien doubled up to around 70k.

Battle of the Big Stacks

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Play moved into level 6 with blinds of 1k/2k, with 200. The board said 279 remain.

Dan Fischer and Jeff Papola

I wandered over to table 15 where the two chip leaders are. They happened to be involved in a pot at the time. On the turn, the board read. K T 2 J and Dan Fischer checked. Jeff Papola (button) bet 15k. Dan called to see a 7 on the river. He checked again and Jeff bet 37k. Dan let it go and Jeff pulled the pot. He's up to ~430k. Dan has around 550k.

John D'Agostino is sharing the same piece of felt as these two big stacks. "Are they the chip leaders?" he asked. As I nodded yes in reply, he seemed to sink a little in his chair.

This will be the last level before dinner break.

Event 19: Chip Leader

$350 + $50 No Limit Hold'em

Patrick Picks Up Chips

While a lot of the players in the noon tournament are casualties from the Championship Event, there are others who specifically targeted this event.

Patrick Ziagos (Factoryville, PA) is spending a week in Atlantic City and this is his first tournament since the series started. "I come down every year at this time when the WPT is here," he says. "I like to sweat some of the big names in the tournament and I still get to play.

Ziagos is one of the first players to crack the 100k mark as he sits with 104k.

One-third of the field is gone as 100 players are left with an average stack of 38k.

Matt Stout Gets a Penalty

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Matt Stout's empty seat

Matt Stout and Al Bari have been exchanging words all day, both on the felt and on Twitter.  Things came to a head in the last five minutes, and the tournament director Tab was called to the table.  We didn't hear what the two players said in this instance, but Stout received a one round penalty and stormed out of the Events Center to cool off.  The rest of their table is now buzzing about whether the penalty was justified.

Who is Danielle Andersen?

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Danielle Andersen

With so few females in the field, we were curious what Danielle Andersen's story was.  We caught up with her at break, and she told us a bit about herself.  Danielle is a high stakes cash player from Minnesota who plays under the name DMoonGirl.  She typically plays $25/$50 NL, but when before we extracted that information, she jokingly said she is a "cash game donk."  Danielle is new to the tournament world, trying her hand at a few World Series of Poker events this summer.  If she were to cash at the Borgata Poker Open, it would be her first tournament cash.  Danielle entered Day 2 with just over 20k in chips and currently sits on a stack of around 50k. With the average stack at over 100k, she has some work to do if she wants to make this her breakout tournament.

"Hollywood" Dave Stann Eliminated

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

"Hollywood" Dave Stann has reported via Twitter that he has busted.  Stann didn't get much going today, and ended up shoving the rest of his stack in with QJ and ran into pocket aces.

Dan Fischer Maintaining His Lead

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Dan Fischer

We caught up with Dan Fischer on the break to find out how he got to be tournament chip leader.  He told us about three big hands that he could recall.

On the first hand, Fischer raised with T6 and was minreraised by his opponent.  Fischer called and the flop fell T63.  He checked called a bet, and then checked call his opponent's all in on the turn when a blank hit.  His opponent had pocket aces, and Fischers hand held up through the river.

On the second hand, Fischer limped in a multiway pot with A3 and hit an almost perfect flop of 793x.  He raised another player's bet of 4k to 10k and instacalled his opponent's all in, who tabled an inferior flush draw with K4.  The turn and the river blanked, and Fischer picked up the pot with just a pair of threes.

On the third hand, a UTG player raised to 1,500 and Fischer smooth called with pocket kings.  There were 2 other callers, and the flop fell 733 rainbow.  The UTG player bet 3,500, and Fischer raised to 8k.  All folded back to UTG, who called.  The turn was the A, putting two hearts on board, and the action went check check.  A blank his the river, and UTG bet 13,500, which Fischer promptly called.  His opponent had KJ for king high, and Fischer took another sizeable pot.

We'll keep an eye on Fischer's stack.  In the meantime, here's a few other big stacks we noticed and some notable chip counts we missed on the last break:

Francis Lamothe - 361,000
Ben Klier - 292,000
Dan O'Brien - 196,000
Al Bari - 168,000
Olivier Busquet - 91,300
Jesse Yaginuma - 43,000
Tom Marchese - 24,300
Matt Stout - 17,700

Event 19: The Back Story

Event: $350 + $50 No Limit Hold'em

Boyle Back for More

It's a bitter sweet moment for some of the players in the noon field. Players like Mike Dentale who busted from the Championship Event are disappointed that they can't get a piece of the nearly $3.5 million buy-in pool, but are glad there's still poker to be played.

"I'm still sick," says Dentale who's Day 1B session ended after his hand was accidentally mucked when he was all-in. "I probably lost, but you hate not knowing for sure." Here's a recap of how the hand played out, as Dentale is forced to regroup and play in the $400.

As for James Boyle, he too went out Sunday when his AJ didn't connect vs 88. "I'm disappointed because I played so well through out the series," says the Havre de Grace, MD resident, who recently got some ESPN coverage. "I thought I was peaking at the right time. I'm disappointed to go out so early in the tournament."

The opportunity to keep playing at Borgata helps remove the sting. "This is a great turnout for a Monday," says Boyle, who's part of today's 313 player field. "I'm thrilled that I get to keep playing and hope for the same thing, tomorrow (Tuesday).

The cage is verifying the final numbers, but it looks like first place will be in the $28,000 range.

Registration is closed as the preliminary indications are that the field is well more than 300 players.

Another break coming

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

The tournament reporting staff was taken aback when it was announced that the players were on break after only one level of play (on Day 1 breaks were taken every 2 levels).  Apparently, on Day 2 there will be a break after every level of play.  The break in 5 minutes will be a longer break (approx. 15 minutes) as the tournament staff will be coloring up the 25 chips.

Ian Palomo

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Ian Palomo stopped by to tell us his bustout hand.  At 400/800 blinds, Ryan D'Angelo raised to 2k in the cutoff.  The small blind called, and Palomo called from the BB with K7.  On a flop of KT7 with two hearts, the small blind bet 5,00 and Palomo moved all in for his last 30k.  D'Angelo folded, but the small blind made the call and tabled AK.  With the turn falling a nine, Palomo was poised for a double up.  But when another nine hit the river, Palomo's two pair was counterfeited, and he was eliminated.

Beasley Takes A Hit

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Action started with Jesse Yaginuma (who got 2nd in the $2k Heads Up), who raised to 1,900 in early position.  He received 5 callers, including Mike Beasley.  On a flop of J2T, action checked to the button, who bet 6k.  All folded to Beasley, who put in a stack of 5k's and 1k's, setting his opponent all in and committing himself to the pot.  The button ended up calling all in for his tournament life, having another 23,275 behind, with QJ.  He was ahead, but had to fade a monster draw as Beasley held 87.  When the turn and the river came Ad3s, Beasley had the case of "too many outs syndrome" and ended up with eight high, taking a big hit to his stack.

Josh Brikis Eliminated

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Josh Brikis

Josh Brikis has been eliminated.  As he describes on his Twitter account, Brikis was all in on the turn with a board reading J856 holding the 76 against his opponent's pocket 8's.  Brikis' monster draw did not hit on the river, and his opponent won the pot to eliminate Brikis early on Day 2.

Darryll Fish came into Day 2 with 23,575 chips, and he is one of our first casualties of the morning.  After losing a pot, Fish reraised all in after William Reynolds opened.  Reynolds made the call with pocket queens, and was racing against Fish's AK.  Fish failed to improve, and he was headed out the door.  As he exited the Events Center, he told Gavin Smith, "I'm going back to sleep."

Event 19: Bubble Breaks

The final 36 players remaining in the 12 pm tournament are in the money and Eric Siegel (Melville, NY) is thrilled to still be playing for the $28,691 first prize."

Event 18 Recap

$500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em

In one 24 hour period Roslyn Quarto (Edison, NJ) goes from devastation to celebration as she wins Event 18 of the Borgata Poker Open, taking home $27,354. "I've made a lot of final tables and have a lot of second places," says, Quarto who beat Don Caldarazzo II (Port Richey, FL) heads-up to win the title, "so I'm really excited."

Early Sunday morning Quarto was crushed in a Championship Event satellite qualifier when her pocket aces were beaten by K 6 and she was eliminated 6 places from winning a seat into the main event. 10 hours later she was back in the Event Center playing in the 12 pm tournament, just a few feet away from the sea of tables in Day 2A of the Championship Event.

After dropping her 15k starting stack to 6k before the dinner break, Quarto rallied throughout the rest of the night and admitted she had, "main event envy."

"I played well yesterday (Saturday)" she said,"But you can't decide when you're going to run well and when you're going to be lucky. Today it's luck and I'll take it."

When the final table began, Everton Taylor had a commanding chip lead, but when he was eliminated in third place, Quarto and Caldarazzo II were nearly dead even in chips. On the first hand of head-up play, Quarto moved all-in with pocket 3s, while Caldarazzo had AK. The classic coin flip was over when Quarto flopped a set and rivered a full house.

When they were done counting out the chips, Caldarazzo II had only 28k left and with blinds at 20k/40k was all-in blind on the next hand and eliminated by Quarto's 8-2 when a two hit the board.

For those who didn't survive Saturday's Day 1A, the noon tournament was a shot at redemption. "I came all the way from Florida and busted in three hours flat," said Caldarazzo II, about his short stay in the Championship Event. "I was going to go back home, but decided to stay and play and wound up in second place. It's great."

Also taking advantage of another big buy-in tournament was Miguel Borrero (Jersey City, NJ), who was at the final table. "I busted yesterday (Saturday)," says Borrero. "I had monster hands but couldn't hit any flops. I figured I'm still here (at Borgata), play this and take it down," he said before finishing in 9th place.

Other Borgata regulars in the field of 188 players included Peter Mavro (Queens, NY), who finished 7th and Michael Woll (Manahawkin, NJ) who has multiple Borgata cashes, including a second place finish in the 6-max tournament during the Borgata Summer Open.

The field also included local rounders, Jamie Kerstetter, Abraham Korotki and Scott Strubel, who where all knocked out before getting a piece of the $94,000 worth of total buy-ins.

In the end it's Quarto's day, even thought it started with early morning disappointment. If her aces weren't cracked and she played in the Championship Event, Quarto would've needed a top 20 finish to equal the money she earned in this tournament and would've taken three more days of play.

"Not too bad for a half a day of work," said Quarto, "take a picture now with all the empty tables behind me. "24 hours makes a big difference."
